Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
