Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
